MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 5
Kansas City Royals vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 6:38 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – TBS
In the top of the first, the Royals will get the bats – or at least what they have of them. They have been brutal at the plate lately despite winning three in a row. Over those three games, they scored just seven runs. If you want to peel it back two more games, they’ve scored just eight runs over their last five games (1.6 runs per game). Gerrit Cole takes the bump on extra rest on Saturday, and it’s hard to imagine that the Royals will be able to rough him up.
Michael Wacha ended the season in solid shape, holding his last four opponents to just six earned runs in 22.2 innings (2.38 ERA in that span). While facing a well-rested Yankees squad might seem like a daunting task, even for someone on a roll, I like the NRFI even more due to the time away. Since the playoffs moved to this 12-team format, the teams with first round byes have struggled in some of their first games – particularly at the plate. As they try to find their footing, I expect Wacha to get three quick outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 5: No (-135)
San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
First Pitch – 8:38 pm EST
Dodgers Stadium – Los Angeles, California
Broadcast – FS1
Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets his playoffs started on Thursday against the Padres. While an injury bogged down his season, he came back in phenomenal shape. He held his opponents to six earned runs in his four starts since coming back. The Padres have scored just 11 runs in their last three games (3.67 per game), and that’s while picking up two of three. I like Yamamoto’s chances to keep them at bay for the first.
In the bottom of the inning, we have one of the most terrifying offenses in the league in the Dodgers. However, Dylan Cease is up to the task of shutting them down. He had a sub-3.00 ERA over the final month of the season and was even better at the very end. He allowed just three earned runs in his last three starts (19.1 innings pitched). That comes out to a 1.40 ERA over that span, which is tough to overlook when we need an NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 5: No (-135)
