MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 18
Oakland Athletics vs. Chicago Cubs
First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Athletics kick off this game at the plate and their hitting hasn’t been much to fear. They rank 24th in the league in first inning runs and 26th in the league in runs in general. They’ve also only scored 16 runs in the last five games, which comes out to 3.2 runs per game in that span. Now things get even more difficult as they face Justin Steele. He returns from the IL with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Before he went down, he was mowing people over. While you have to be concerned about just how he comes back, this Oakland squad doesn’t scare me all that much.
The Cubs get their hacks in the bottom of the inning. They’re just above a league average team at the plate and they actually will run into another tough pitcher. Brady Basso might not have the largest sample size, but he’s been great since becoming a starter. The lefty has thrown 11.1 innings as a starter and has yet to give up an earned run. That should help us bring this NRFI home.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 18: No (TBD)
Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Nationals are in the bottom third of the league in terms of run scoring, but they are far worse in the first inning. They rank 29th in the majors with just 0.39 runs per game in the first inning. That ranks just barely ahead of the 100+ loss White Sox. Meanwhile, Jose Quintana, who gets the ball on Wednesday, hasn’t been an easy day at the park. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in either of his last two starts – totaling 13.2 innings pitched.
The NRFI comes home with DJ Herz on the bump for the Nationals. He’s been good lately, holding three of his last four opponents to just one run or fewer. He’s really been limiting the flyballs lately too, which should help him keep some of the big bats for the Mets in the park. With those things combined, I think there’s a good chance he wraps this one up for us.
