MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 17

Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

To kick off the top of the first, Gavin Williams takes the hill against the Twins. The surface stats don’t look great for him on the year, but as of late he’s been much better. He’s limited his opponents to three runs or fewer in four of his last five games. He also has been mostly solid in the first, getting an NRFI in three of those five games. Those games were against far better hitting teams as well – like the Dodgers, Yankees, and Royals. As a result, I think he should be able to get past the middle of the road Twins here.

In the bottom of the inning, we’ll see the Guardians, who are ice cold at the plate. In the last five games, they’ve scored just 15 total runs (3.0 per game). They’ll face rookie Zebby Matthews, who also has pretty gaudy numbers on the season. However, that’s largely due to one big outlier causing the numbers to go up. If you ignore his blowout loss at the hands of the Blue Jays, he has a 4.24 ERA on the season. With his lack of walks – both as a major and minor leaguer – he should be even better against the high-contact Guardians.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 17: No (-115)

New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – ESPN+

In Tuesday evening’s nightcap, the Yankees get first ups. Trying to keep the NRFI intact to start will be Bryan Woo. Outside of a few injury layoffs, Woo has been outstanding on the season. He has a 2.38 ERA, which is actually higher than his monthly ERA for August. He’s also been three straight games without allowing a first inning run, and I think he should be able to keep that going here.

The bottom of the first shows us an ERA that isn’t all that different from Woo. Luis Gil has a 3.18 ERA and has been untouchable in his last two outings. In that span, he’s allowed just one earned run in 11.0 innings. That includes 12 strikeouts with just six hits allowed. He’ll face a Mariners squad that has not been carrying their weight at the plate. They rank 30th in team batting average and 30th in team strikeouts. Gil should be able to bring this one home for us in Seattle.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 17: No (-140)
