MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 16

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Braves offense has gotten going a bit here in this series, but the numbers are a little misleading. They have 18 runs over a three game stretch, but a third of those came in one inning during the second game. If you take that out, the Braves are still just scoring 4.0 runs per game over that stretch, which is actually a bit below their ho-hum season average. Facing Yoshinobu Yamamoto definitely won’t help. He came back from injury looking better than ever – throwing 4.0 scoreless with eight strikeouts against the Cubs.

On the other side, you could say the same thing about the Dodgers hitting in this series. They’ve scored just 12 runs in this series, which comes out to 4.0 per game. However, seven of them came in the 9th inning on Sunday when the Braves fell apart. That means they had just five runs in the 26 innings prior. Max Fried is on the bump for the Braves and he should be tough enough to keep that trend intact.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 16: No (-130)

Oakland Athletics vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Athletics get first hacks in this one and they’ve been awful at the plate this year. They rank 24th and 26th in runs and first inning runs respectively. They’ll get Shota Imanaga here in the first inning. Imanaga has been solid the last couple of times out. He’s thrown 14.0 innings and allowed just seven hits and three runs. Those two starts were against much better offensive teams than Oakland, so I like him to get us three early outs unscathed.

The bottom of the first will be a little sweatier than the top. The Cubs are a slightly above average hitting team on the year, ranking 13th in runs scored. However, I’ll still put my faith in Joey Estes. He’s held opponents to two or less runs in four of his last five starts. His August ERA was 3.03 and he’s coming off a start where he held the Astros to just two runs in 6.2 innings.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 16: No (-135)
