MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 12
Colorado Rockies vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first should be no sweat at all here. Presumed AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal toes the rubber in the matinee. His ERA is just 2.53 on the year and he’s allowed more than three runs in a start just once in the last three months. Now he’ll get to face the Rockies, who despite playing in Coors Field half of the time, still rank 23rd in runs scores. I have to imagine this is a quick and easy start to the NRFI.
The bottom half is sure to be a bit tougher – seeing as we don’t have the best pitcher in the American League on our side. We still do have a below average offense in Detroit and one that has struggled in the first inning. They rank 24th in first inning runs this year, which should make things easier on Ryan Feltner. His ERA on the season may be pressing up against 5.00, but he’s shown way better stuff as of late. He’s held ten of his last eleven opponents to just three earned runs or fewer. Coming off of a one-run performance over 6.0 innings against a tough Brewers lineup last time, I like him to keep the momentum going.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 12: No (TBD)
Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, Washington
Broadcast – ESPN+
The Mariners have been an easy team to target on NRFIs lately for a couple of reasons. The first is that they have a slew of solid starters that easily breeze through the first inning. Bryce Miller is one of those arms and he gets the ball on Thursday. He carries a 3.18 ERA into action against the Rangers and has been even better lately. He’s allowed just six total runs over his last six starts (34.2 innings). With Texas in the bottom third of the league in run scoring, I don’t see this trend changing anytime soon.
On the other side of this NRFI, we’re backing a player who has never started a game before. One of the primary reasons is that the Mariners are terrible at the plate. They still rank 25th in runs scored and 30th in team batting average. The second is that this is no regular rookie, but the highly touted prospect Kumar Rocker. From his time at Vanderbilt, he’s flashed big league stuff. I’m not sure how late they’ll have him throw, but it doesn’t matter for our purposes. With having the perfect team to debut against, he should get that NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 12: No (TBD)
