Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick’em Plays – September 5
Cal Raleigh Higher Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
The Mariners 2024 season can be summed up with one word: disappointing. Seattle had a commanding 9-game lead of first place back in June and saw that dwindle away. Now they are 70-70 and 5.5 games back of the inevitable Houston Astros. They tried adding at the deadline and firing their manager, but neither has done the trick.
One of the bright spots for Seattle this season has been Cal Raleigh. Raleigh is a true three-outcomes guy. He has 28 homers, 58 walks, and 154(!) strikeouts. I like Raleigh in this spot against Oakland A’s pitcher Joey Estes. In a small sample size, he is 3-7 with 2 homers against Estes.
Raliegh is also hitting well to start the month of September. He has a .922 OPS in 15 at-bats so far, and I think he will continue this success here.
Merrill Kelly Lower Than 17.5 PItching outs
Merrill Kelly has been disappointing for the D-Backs in the second half. In his last four starts, he has a 6.75 ERA and has allowed 5 home runs in his last three starts. I’ll be fading Kelly in this spot against the Giants’ offense. Kelly has not faced the Giants so far this season, but Giants hitters have a career xwOBA of .374 against Kelly.
Simply put, Kelly has not looked sharp lately, and I’m banking on this trend to continue.
Ranger Suarez Higher Than 34.5 Fantasy Points
Ranger Suarez is another pitcher who has struggled as of late. He has allowed 16 earned runs in his last five starts, which is definitely a stat to be concerned about. I know this contradicts my last selection, but I think Suarez will have a bounce-back start in this matchup against the Marlins.
Miami has one of the league’s worst offenses, ranking 29th in runs per game. Suarez has also dominated his matchup against Jake Burger, who is the only hitter in this lineup I worry about.
