MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 2

Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics

First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mariners hitting has just been so bad lately that they are alway in consideration for an NRFI. They rank 30th in the majors in both batting average and strike outs. They are also one of four teams to average under 4.00 runs per game. Osvaldo Bido is a nightmare matchup for them right now. He has allowed just three earned runs in his last four games and he’s had five or more strikeouts in seven straight. His August ERA was just 1.55, which means he should coast through this Mariners lineup.

While the Athletics have had some decent pitching performances, they are still brutal at the plate as well. They rank 24th in the league in runs in the first inning and 25th in runs overall. Logan Gilbert shouldn’t have an issues dealing with that. He carries a 3.09 ERA into Monday’s action. He’s also coming off 6.0 shutout innings against the Rays and struck out ten in the process. The Rays aren’t a great hitting team, but are comperable to the Athletics.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 2: No (-130)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Pirates will be the first to try to ruin our NRFI against Jameson Taillon. Let’s be clear, Taillon has been bad lately. However, the Pirates are one of the worst teams in the first inning. They average just 0.35 runs in the first, which is only ahead of the White Sox (and only 0.02 ahead of them). The other reason I’m backing Taillon here is that even though he’s been bad lately, he hasn’t been awful in the first inning. In fact, while he’s given up 17 runs over his last four starts, not a single one of those has been in the first inning.

On the other side of things, we’ve already ridden the Cubs to back-to-back NRFIs. That’s mostly because they are just an average team and have had some tough pitching matchups. This one is no different. Despite getting hit around a little bit in his first outing back from injury, rookie Jared Jones has been solid this year. We’ll write that off as him getting himself back on track and expect the older version here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 2: No (-140)
