MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 30
St. Louis Cardinals vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first doesn’t seem like much of a sweat for the NRFI in this one. The Cardinals are 24th in the majors in runs scored and are below average in the first inning. It won’t help that offense all that much to see Marcus Stroman on the bump. He’s allowed just four earned runs in his last three starts, which is good for a 2.25 ERA in that span. While that was largely against bad hitting teams, the Cardinals don’t really surpass them all that much. As a result, I think Stroman has a pretty easy night, particularly early on.
While we’ll see a far better offense in the bottom of the inning, we also are going to see a pitcher with a better ERA than Stroman. Erick Fedde carries a 3.31 ERA into Friday’s action. He shut down a pair of good hitting teams in his last two starts – holding the Twins and the Padres to just three runs in 11.2 innings. He also fanned seven hitters in the most recent of those two, the one against the Twins. That’s a positive sign to see those numbers going up and it should help him here against the Yankees.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 30: No (-105)
Miami Marlins vs. San Francisco Giants
First Pitch – 10:15 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
Blake Snell has been mowing people over as of late, and that doesn’t look to change any time soon. He’s allowed just six earned runs in his last five games. The most impressive thing is the strikeout numbers. In those five games (31.1 innings), he has 45 strikeouts. It was also recently announced that he is expected to opt out of his contract at the end of the year, which means he’s looking to put up numbers. Meanwehile, the Marlins are 29th in the majors in runs, just a touch above the historically bad White Sox in the category. It should be an easy first three outs.
The bottom of the inning has a far less esteemed starter. The Marlins will go with Adam Oiler, who has just two starts this year and just 17 on his career. The most recent one looked great though. He went 5.2 innings against the Cubs and held them to just one run with six strieouts. The Giants might hit better than the Marlins, but they’re 25th in the league in scoring in the first inning. Oiler should be able to give us another three quick outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 30: No (-135)
