MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 28
Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 12:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV
It’s Paul Skenes day, which means we’re tracking a NRFI out of Pittsburgh.
The Pirates continue to be a terrible hitting team. They rank 23rd in the majors in terms of run scoring and are far worse in the first inning. They rank 28th in runs in the first inning – just 0.02 per game ahead of the miserable White Sox offense. Kyle Hendricks will be the man trying to keep those trends in tact. His yearly numbers are not pretty – 6.33 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. However, he’s been far better lately. He has four straight starts with three runs or less. That has left his month ERA at just 3.45, which is good enough for our purposes here.
On the other side of the equation, it’s still Paul Skenes day. He has a 2.16 ERA and is a candidate for both the NL Rookie of the Year and the NL Cy Young. He is also coming off of a shutout performance against the Reds – going 6.0 innings and allowing just two base runners. He also struck out nine in that outing. The Cubs are nothing special with the bats and certainly don’t scare me with him on the bump.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 28: No (TBD)
Atlanta Braves vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV
A day I like to tail almost as much as Paul Skenes day is Chris Sale day.
The Braves offense, while they have been a touch better, have not been great lately. On Monday they tagged the Twins for four runs in the first, but that is certainly not the norm lately. That’s the only game in the last five contest that they have scored in the first inning.
They’ll face David Festa on Wednesday. He may not be a household name and the surface numbers don’t look stellar just seven games into his career. However, he’s another pitcher who was great in August and has been lights out lately. He;s held his opponents to two or less runs in five of his last six starts. That should be enough to get us three outs on Wednesday.
On the other side, there is far less to say. The Twins offense has started slow in both games in this series and they weren’t even facing the presumed NL Cy Young winner in Chris Sale. He carries a 2.62 ERA into Wednesday’s action and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a game since June 1st.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 28: No (TBD)
