Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – August 23

Kyle Schwarber – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Schwarber didn’t have a banner series against the Braves. He went just 1-for-10 and struck out seven times. However, I’m calling for him to break that slump here against Michael Wacha. Schwarber has seen the ball out of Wacha’s hand particularly well. He’s 7-for-19 all time against the Royals righty. Five of those hits were for extra bases – including four that left the park. With his all or nothing swing, it should just take one hit to get to this mark. With how he’s hit Wacha historically, I think he’ll get at least that.

Paul Blackburn – Higher than 5.5 Hits Allowed

Since coming to the Mets, Blackburn has been hit around a bit. He’s given up 21 hits in his four starts, which comes out to an average of 5.2 hits per game. While that’s under this projection, it is barely under and you have to considcer the strength of schedule. Blackburn has faced the Marlins, Rockies, Angels, and Athletics as a member of New York. In terms of hits, the highest ranked of those teams is the Rockies at 14th best in the league. Blackburn will get the Padres here, who rank 2nd in offensive hits per game.

Elly De La Cruz – Higher than 0.5 Total Bases

Not sure why Underdog has lowered De La Cruz’s projection to just half of a total base, but he’s been on a roll. In his last three games, he’s totaled ten bases. He’s ripped a triple and a homer in that period. Not only that, but he had a hit in each of those three games. There’s nothing about a pitching matchup with Bailey Falter that scares me away from this, so I’m all over De La Cruz.
