MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 23
Los Angeles Angels vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, Ontario
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, we’ll see the Angels, who are 26th in MLB at scoring runs. If matters couldn’t get worse for them, they are actually worse in the first inning, where they are 28th in the majors (only ahead of the White Sox and Pirates). They have been on quite a skid as well, scoring three or less runs in nine of their last ten games. They’ll face Chris Bassitt on Friday, which doesn’t seem like it’ll help either. While he’s been up and down lately, he has held his opponents to three or less runs in two of his last three starts. The Angels shouldn’t give him too much trouble here.
The Blue Jays aren’t doing a much better job at putting tons of runs on the board. They also rank in the bottom third of the league in runs scored. Despite that, the line is juiced here to the over because of the Angels’ pitching situation. Jack Kochanowicz has a 6.53 ERA and that is going to scare a lot of people off. However, he’s found his groove lately. The 6’7″ righty has allowed just two earned runs in each of his last two starts while throwing a combined 13.2 innings. If that version of him shows up yet again, he should be able to get through three outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 23: No (+100)
Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLB TV
On Thursday we got in on a NRFI because it was Paul Skenes Day, on Friday we get in on Chris Sale day. The frontrunner for the NL Cy Young has been dominant lately, and all year for that matter. The last time he allowed more than two runs in a game was on June 1st. He also has three straight games with at least ten strikeouts. The Nationals rank 28th in the majors in first inning runs, so I doubt they’ll get to him early.
Another reason why we like Chris Sale day is just how stagnant the Braves offense has been. In the last four games, they have scored just 11 total runs. They’re banged up bad and starting a trio of players who got waived earlier in the year (Whit Merrifield, Ramon Laureano, and Gio Urshela). MacKenzie Gore hasn’t been a vision of stability this year, but he should be good enough to close up our NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 23: No (-145)
