Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – August 21
Jordan Montgomery – Lower than 4.5 Strikeouts
Big strikeout days haven’t really been on the menu this year for Montgomery. He had just ten over his previous four outings before a home start with the Rockies. In that start, he mowed down eight, and seemingly in one game launched his projected numbers in to space. It’s worth mentioning that the Rockies are 29th in the majors in strikeouts and the Marlins are a pretty average team when it comes to that category. I think we see Montgomery come back down to Earth here.
Max Fried – Higher than 2.0 Walks Allowed
Since returning from a minor injury, the accuracy just hasn’t been there for Fried. His fastball seems like it’s consistently riding up on him and he’s regularly missing with it. As a result, he’s walked 11 in his last three games (3.67 per game). The Phillies are 6th in the majors in drawing walks. After a lackluster offensive day on Tuesday, I would expect a patient approach from them and grabbing as many free bases as they can.
Jack Flaherty – Higher than 7.5 Strikeouts
Since being traded to the Dodgers, Flaherty has either surpassed this mark or come in half a strikeout shy. You have to immediately love that fact and how it gives him a chance. Then you add in that he faces the Mariners, who have been just terrible at the plate. Not only are they 27th in runs scored and 30th in batting average, but they are the worst in the league in terms of strikeouts. That’s the category we care the most about here.
