MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 12
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV
St. Louis has had a lackluster offense all year long. They rank 22nd in runs scored on the year, but have had a lot more issues on the road. Ranked 25th in the majors in road runs per game, they are coming off an ugly performance at Kansas City. They stay on the road here to face Andrew Abbott. While Abbott got tagged a bit in his last start, he’s been generally solid acorss the year with a 3.70 ERA. We’ve also seen an uptick in his strikeouts with 15 over his last two starts, which should help him out of any jams he may run into during the first inning Monday.
The Reds have been a middle of the pack run scoring team this year. They rank in or near the middle in pretty much all of the meaningful stats conducive to run scoring. However, they have been much worse as of late. In a three-game set with the Brewers, the Reds managed just seven total runs. Things won’t get easier for them with Sonny Gray on the bump Monday. He’s allowed just four runs over his last two starts (14.0 innings) and I expect him to stay sharp early in this one.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 12: No (-120)
Houston Astros vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 6:50 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, Florida
Broadcast – MLB TV
These two teams are usually ones that we’re talking about in August due to how they’re rolling. Instead, their offenses are both surprisingly dull. The Astros rank 13th in the majors in run scoring. Despite having a good team batting average and not striking out a ton, they’re struggling to score because they simply don’t walk (27th in MLB). That should help Taj Bradley as his major issue of late has been issuing too many free passes. Apart from that, Bradley has been sharp – so I expect him to be able to get our NRFI started right here.
Framber Valdez is slated to finish off our NRFI success for Monday. He takes the bump against a struggling Rays offense. They’re one of just four teams that are not averaging four runs per game and have been a touch worse than that over their last five. Valdez meanwhile has been mowing people down over his last five starts. He has 41 strikeouts and only nine runs allowed in 33.2 innings pitched. He should have no problem keeping Tampa Bay at bay.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 12: No (-135)
