MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 26
Cincinnati Reds vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 6:50 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, Florida
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first Shane Baz looks to keep the Reds at bay and get our NRFI started right. That’s not too much of an ask in the first place as the Reds are a middle of the pack team in terms of run scoring. They’re even a touch worse when it comes to putting runs across in the first inning – where they rank 21st in the majors.
Baz has a short sample size on the year, but it does show signs of promise. In just three outings, he’s put up a sub-4.00 ERA, and that’s while facing the Rangers and the Yankees twice. More importantly than all of that, he has started off sharp in every game. He has yet to allow of first inning run and has allowed just one in the second inning, Against a much easier Reds squad, he should roll early again.
Tampa Bay is also a squad not hitting all that well. They rank 26th in runs scored across MLB. Despite a 13-run outburst on Thursday, their offense lately hasn’t been that hot either. They’ll face Nick Lodolo, who has been up and down this year. However, his 3.51 ERA and affinity for ground balls should help us cash this NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 26: No (-120)
Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Guaranteed Rate Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV
Add Drew Thorpe to the long list of White Sox pitchers who are blowing me away this year despite their awful record. He has a 3.03 ERA and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a game since June 16th. He has at least five strikeouts in three of his last five games and had four in one of the other two. Those numbers might even see a bump as he faces the team that strikeouts out the most in all of the majors. In addition, the Mariners have scored just three runs in their last three games combined. It should be a good spot for Thorpe to roll again.
On the other side, the reasoning is simple – it’s the White Sox. Nobody scores less than these guys with just 3.09 runs per game. That rate is nearly half a run behind the next worst team. Facing George Kirby isn’t going to make that any better. He’s coming off of back-to-back starts with just one earned run allowed. Also, he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start since mid-May. The White Sox shouldn’t get him any issues and we should walk out of this with an easy NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 26: No (-140)
