MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 24

Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Tigers are a middle of the pack team in terms of scoring runs in just about every way that matters to us. They rank 15th in MLB in both first inning runs and runs overall. On Wednesday, they’ll face Tanner Bibee, who has been solid this year. He carries a 3.58 ERA into the game and is coming off a great start against the Padres. In that game, he went 5.2 innings and didn’t allow an earned run. He also held them to just two hits in that outing. The Tigers offense ranks worse than the Padres and that should be enough to trust him to get us three outs here.

Trying to wrap up our first NRFI on Wednesday is popular trade target Jack Flaherty. The Tigers righty has catapaulted his value for his 2025 contract by carrying a 3.13 ERA into late July. While the Guardians’ offense is on the fringe of being top 10, Flaherty has been sensational as of late. He’s allowed two or less runs in six of his last seven starts. The strikeout numbers are solid there too – he’s struck out at least six batters in five of those seven games.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 24: No (-140)

San Diego Padres vs. Washington Nationals

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

The aforementioned Padres try to spoil our NRFI in the top of the first, but they’ll have an underrated arm as an obstacle. Mitchell Parker has been solid for the Nationals this year. His 3.90 ERA and 1.14 WHIP are not blowing anyone’s socks off, but a lot of that is due to a couple bad starts. He had a 3.15 ERA in June and has allowed two or less earned runs in five of his last eight starts. The Padres also haven’t been terrible hot at the plate in the last week. They’ve scored just 16 runs in their last five games (just 3.2 per game in that span). Parker should be able to find his footing early in this one.

In the bottom of the firtst, Matt Waldron will take the mound looking to close out our NRFI. The best news for him is that no team in the league is worse at scoring in the first inning than the Nationals. They;re averaging just 0.28 runs per game in the first inning. Waldron’s recent run of success should be enough to keep that run going. He has allowed more than three earned runs in a start just one time since early May. Expect him to use his knuckleball to keep them off guard and finish this one off for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 24: No (-120)
