Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – July 22
Will Smith – Higher than 0.5 Total Bases
Underdog has Smith’s total listed at just 0.5 total bases, but I actually think this would be a big spot for two or more. There are two reasons to buy in on Smith right now. Firstly, he faces Blake Snell, who hasn’t been great and who Smith has had success against in the past. He has seven career hits against the Padres lefty, which includes a pair of homers and a double. That gives us a .500 slugging percentage in the matchup lifetime.
Additionally, Smith got the day off on Sunday. Recently, when he takes a day off, he comes out hot the next game. He has four straight games with multiple hits following a rest day.
Austin Riley – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases
Since coming out of the break, in three games against the Cardinals, Riley has seven total bases. That’s good for 2.33 per game over that span. Now he’ll get a favorable matchup in Hunter Greene, who is known to give up some extra-base hits. Riley has seen him well in his limited sample. He’s 3-for-6 career against him with two of those hits being doubles. I like his chances to grab another here and get over the projection.
Erick Fedde – Lower than 5.5 Hits Allowed
Fedde has been one of my favorite guys to tail over this season. The fact that he is a veteran playing for the White Sox, I believe, gets him overlooked on some of these projections. He hasn’t given up six hits in any of his last four games. That includes a game with the Dodgers and one with the Guardians. If he’s out here limiting those teams and their offense, the Rangers should be no problem for him on Monday.
