2024 Open Championship Picks
Outright Bets
Tyrrell Hatton 28/1
It’s tough to say how popular of a pick Tyrrell Hatton will be this week. While most will see his good recent form on LIV and that he finished Top 10 at the 2016 Open at Troon, others may completely discount anything he’s done on the LIV tour due to a lack of meaningful statistics and his relatively little experience being in contention at a major championship.
Bettors should align more with the former than the latter when it comes to Hatton at the 2024 Open Championship. A key indicator of eventual champions of the Open Championship is trending iron play and hot putting.
And that’s exactly what Hatton has been doing on LIV over his last two tournaments. Hatton has been one of the leaders in green in regulation % over his last two tournaments, as well as one of the leaders in putting.
And Hatton has begun to experience what it’s like at the top of major championship leaderboards. Hatton finished T9 at the 2024 Masters and was T7 at the U.S. Open after 54 holes. The more he keeps knocking on the door, the more likely he is to fall into a major championship.
Given his recent form and how well it matches with recent Open Champions, Hatton is a great pick to win the 2024 Open Championship.
Patrick Cantlay 45/1
Patrick Cantlay is an enigma. He has all the tools to be a multiple-time major champion. And yet, he has underachieved time and time again in his career. He should have more than five Top 10’s at majors in 27 tries as a professional. And all year, Cantlay was struggling.
He struggled with consistency with his irons and putting, which is typically a strength. Many wrote him off completely at Pinehurst No. 2, particularly because of his poor history on Bermuda and firm and fast conditions.
And then, like magic, Cantlay showed up to Pinehurst completely fixed. He unexpectedly led after the first round and recorded his first Top 5 finish at a major since the 2019 PGA Championship. And those putter and iron woes he had all year? He was one of the leaders in both categories at Pinehurst No. 2.
So what changed? Ahead of the U.S. Open, Patrick Cantlay went back to his old set of irons after experimenting with PING clubs all year long. And he also updated his driver. Going back to old clubs seemed to have paid off, as not only was he Top 5 at the U.S. Open, but he was also Top 5 at the next week’s Travelers Championship.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t played in a month. He was supposed to play the John Deere a few weeks ago, but he withdrew due to an undisclosed injury.
However, there are no indications that he’s still injured, and it’s very possible that the mercurial Patrick Cantlay simply didn’t want to spend four more days in the Quad Cities. In addition, Jordan Spieth didn’t play golf between the Travelers and the Open Championship in 2017, and he was victorious nonetheless. It can be done.
With solid form in the key indicators ahead of the Open Championship and recent success in a major, Cantlay is a solid pick to win the 2024 Open Championship.

Positional Bets
Shane Lowry Top 20 – +175
In 20 years when we’re looking at Shane Lowry’s Wikipedia page, we’ll probably only see his lone Open Championship in 2019 on his major resume. But for those looking for a piece of Shane Lowry on their betting card, a Top 20 prop is a decent pick for the 2024 Open Championship.
In addition, Lowry is heating up ahead of Royal Troon. Both his putting and his approach play were very good at the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship. In addition, Lowry is proven to excel in poor weather conditions, which is certainly in play at Royal Troon.
The weather is very unpredictable on the West Coast of Scotland. He has the toughness and chops to handle it. And because of that, he’s a solid Top 20 pick at the 2024 Open Championship.
Tony Finau Top 20 – +180
Tony Finau is going to be a very chalk pick to win the 2024 Open Championship. In related news, Las Vegas builds very expensive casinos. But his popularity is for good reason. Tony Finau has returned as one of the best players in the world with an iron in hand.
What typically is the kryptonite to Tony Finau’s game, his putter, has been pretty good over his last few tournaments. Finau has putt very well in his last three tournaments, which has led to a Top 10 at the Memorial and a pair of Top 5s at the U.S. Open and Travelers Championship.
The downside to Tony is that he (inexplicably, I may add) took a month off after the Travelers Championship. As someone who was very high on Tony Finau grabbing his first major championship at Royal Troon, I was extremely disappointed that he chose not to play a driver-heavy Tom Doak golf course in the Renaissance Club, a golf course much suited to his strengths.
With that said, picking him for a Top 20 at +180 is a consolation prize for the 2024 Open Championship betting card.
