MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 13
Kansas City Royals vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast – NESN
While Kansas City’s bats started the season hot, theyd’ve fallen all the way to 12th in the league in runs. They are even worse when it comes to the first inning. They rank 17th in the league with under half a run per game in the opening frame. Facing Kutter Crawford is not going to help matters, as he’s on a fine trajectory. His 3.24 ERA is nothing to be ashamed of, but he’s been even better lately. He’s allowed just one earned run in his last two starts (13.0 innings) and only seven hits in that span. One of those starts came against the Yankees, which gives me all the confidence he can stall the Royals.
The Red Sox are hitting a bit better than the Royals right now, both in the first inning and throughout the game. However, they have to face AL ERA and wins leader Seth Lugo, who has been a revelation for the Royals this year. His 2.21 ERA should give you the confidence that he could keep any team at bay for three outs. He’s had five straight quality starts and I expect another from him here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 13: No (-115)
Washington Nationals vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Broadcast – MLB TV
Washington managed to score in the first inning on Friday, but that was the first time they had in a week. They continue to be the worst team in the majors when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They average just 0.27 runs per game. They’ll face the newest Brewers acquisition, Dallas Keuchel. While his first start didn’t look like his old self, he’s settled in for the last two. He’s allowed just two earned runs since (9.2 innings) and kept the Dodgers scoreless the last time out. Also, it’s worth noting that he hasn’t allowed a first inning run all year.
The Brewers also have issues scoring in the first inning. Despite being a top ten run scoring team, they rank 23rd in the majors at scoring in the first inning. Mitchell Parker is going to keep making that tricky for them. He has a respectable 3.44 ERA. He’s also coming off a start where he through seven innings with just one earned run against the Cardinals. Even in his roughest start of the last month, two weeks ago against the Mets, he had them scoreless through the first two innings. I expect him to get through at least three outs and close out this NRFI for us.
