MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 5

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – NESN

In the top half of the inning, we’ll have to be a touch weary of the Red Sox’s surprisingly good offense. They’re 11th in runs scored this year, but have been worse in the first inning, where they rank 14th. That middle of the pack offense might not be enough to get on Nestor Cortes early. The mustachioed Yankee had a bit of a touch June, but finished it with an ERA still under 4.00. His season ERA is just 3.51. Perhaps more importantly than all of that, he gave up a first inning run in just one of his six starts in the month of June. I expect him to be able to sit down the Sox early.

Despite the Yankees having one of the better offenses in the league, I have even more faith in Tanner Houck. The Red Sox righty is turning into a Cy Young candidate (he’s currently in the top five of most sportsbooks). The Padres got to him in his last start, but he otherwise did well of limiting the flyballs in June, which is really important in Yankee Stadium. Also working in his (and our) favor is his history against the Yankees. In 44.2 career innings against the Yankees, he’s allowed just ten earned runs (2.01 ERA). Even more impressive, he’s allowed only two home runs in that span.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 5: No (-115)

Baltimore Orioles vs. Oakland Athletics

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, Califnornia
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s always a little dicey when you look for an NRFI with this Athletics team. There’s no real way to know what you’re going to get from the defensively. With that being said, I do like what I’ve seen from Hogan Harris. He’s only allowed more than three earned runs in one game this year and that was his debut. He looked particularly sharp in his start this month against Kansas City, limiting them to one run over five innings. In addition, the Orioles offense has sputtered out a bit lately. They have just 11 runs in their last four games (2.75 runs per game). That should bode well for Harris here.

The bottom half of the inning should be far less of a sweat. The Athletics are 28th in runs scored and 29th in runs scored in the first inning. They haven’t scored a first inning run since June 22nd. Things won’t get any easier against Albert Suarez. He’s fresh off six strong innings of holding the Rangers scoreless. Since being stretched out as a starter, he’s allowed more than three runs just once. This Atheltics team shouldn’t bring him any harm.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 5: No (-125)
