Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – June 17
Daulton Varsho Higher than 6.5 Fantasy Points
Daulton Varsho has quietly been having another solid season north of the border. His .220 batting average won’t exactly blow your socks off, but his .301 on base percentage, .457 SLUG, and his 100th-percentile Fielding Run Value, make him an extremely valuable player for this disappointing Blue Jays squad.
The reason I love Varsho in this spot is his success against Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta. Varsho is 4-8 in 9 career plate appearances against Pivetta, including 2 home runs and an xSLUG of .979. This fantasy points number of just 6.5 seems a bit too low, which is why I am all over it in this spot.
Jordan Hicks Higher than 25.5 Fantasy Points
Here is another fantasy points number that just seems way too low. In the offseason, many questioned the Giant’s extensive contract offer to Jordan Hicks, who had only been a reliever. In his first year as a starter, Hicks has impressed with a 3.01 ERA in 14 games started. He carries the reputation of having some of the best strikeout stuff in baseball, although he has focused much more on location over velocity in 2024.
Hicks is facing the struggling Cubs’ offense, which has scored five runs in just one of their last ten games. Chicago hitters are also 3-21 lifetime against Hicks. If he can go past the fifth inning in this one, I think he hits this number easily.
Kyle Schwarber Higher than 0.5 Batter Walks
We have been riding this Schwarber walk selection, and it has paid off quite well. Schwarby has been heating up in June, making the already dangerous Phillies lineup even more scary. He has 8 walks in 13 June games, not to mention his 99th percentile walk rate. Schwarber takes his walks and pitchers are more inclined to put him on when he’s swinging a hot bat like he is right now!
