MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 14
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Baltimore Orioles
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Oriole Park at Camden Yards – Baltimore, Maryland
Broadcast – MLB TV
If you’re looking for an NRFI in this game, it certainly isn’t because of the offenses. These two teams are ranked #1 and #2 in the majors in terms of runs scored. While each team struggled to get the bats going in their last series, that isn’t why I’m on the NRFI here.
The reason I like the offenses to remain dormant early is the arms that are going. Ranger Suarez is the front-runner for NL Cy Young at this point. He has 10 wins and a 1.81 ERA. He’s struck out 85 guys already on the year in just 79.2 innings. If somebody can keep the Orioles quiet in the first, it’ll be Ranger.
You could say a lot of the same things about Kyle Bradish. Apart from a hiccup against the Rays, he’s been really good as of late. He carries a 2.62 ERA into Friday’s action and hasn’t allowed a home run all season. That’s big when facing these big boppers on the Phillies.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 14: No (-105)
Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Minute Maid Park – Houston, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV
With all the names that emerged for the Tigers last season, I think their offense has been a bit of a disappointment. They’re 19th in the majors in runs scored and 15th in first inning runs. None of that exactly screams early runs for the Tigers in the top half of the first.
Although some might see some positive outlook with Hunter Brown and his 5.58 ERA on the bump, his fortunes have turned a bit as of late. In his last four starts (24.0 innings), he’s allowed just six earned runs. That includes a game with the Twins, who are hitting much better than the Tigers, and two games with the Angels, who are right in line with Detroit.
On the other side of things, there is far less to justify in terms of the NRFI. Tarik Skubal will take the hill and he’s been fantastic this year. He’s 8-1 on the year with a 1.92 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. He’s allowed just two earned runs over his last 19.2 innings pitched and has 24 strikeouts in that same span. He should shut them down for at least three outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 14: No (-140)
