MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 11

Washington Nationals vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kenta Maeda hasn’t looked all that great over the course of the season. He carries a hefty 6.25 ERA into Tuesday’s action, which hardly inspires confidence in the NRFI here. However, he has the benefit of facing a brutal Nationals offense. They’re 29th in the majors in first inning runs scored with just 0.25 per game. They’re also in the bottom third of runs scored in general. So even though this is far more of a fade of the offense than a tail of the pitching, I like Maeda to get us through the top of the first here.

In the bottom half of the inning, Mitchell Parker will take the bump. He, on the other hand, has been sneaky good for the Nationals. He’s started 10 games already and has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any of them. Additionally, the bulk of the runs he has given up have come later in the game – when his manager should have likely already gotten him out of there. With this being the case and the Tigers being a below-average offense, I think he’ll shut the door on the NRFI here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 11: No (-120)

Houston Astros vs. San Francisco Giants

First Pitch – 9:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

Most of this game is a tail on the pitchers that I see. Jordan Hicks and Ronel Blanco are both having excellent seasons. Each has an ERA under 3.00. Both of them are striking out right around eight batters per nine innings and have a WHIP hovering just about 1.00. There’s plenty of reason to get down with both of them when chasing an NRFI.

However, that’s not the only reason I like this spot. The Astros have struggled offensively this year—at least by comparative terms. Right now, they sit outside the top ten in runs scored. With the exception of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the last time the Astros finished that far down was 2016. It’s worth noting that they are roughly in the same spot for first inning runs.

The Giants haven’t been an offensive juggernaut, either. They’re 19th in runs scored and are far worse in the first inning. They are all the way down at 27th in the majors in first inning runs – at just 0.33 per game. That puts them a spot behind the White Sox and gives me all the confidence that Blanco can get through this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 11: No (-130)
