MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 9

Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Nationals Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top half of the inning will be the biggest sweat here. It’s not because the Cubs are a hot hitting team – in fact they’re 17th in the majors in runs scored. Rather, the reason is that we’ve seen a few different versions of Frankie Montas on this short season. He had allowed three or more runs in four straight starts going into Denver last week. He then threw seven scoreless with nine strikeouts. That version of him wasn’t new as we saw streaks of it earlier in the year too. Seeing him back on track last start gives me hope that he’ll be back with the A-game again.

The bottom half of the inning should be no sweat at all. The Reds are 24th in the league at scoring in the first inning and will have to try to change the trand against Shota Imanaga. Imagana has looked human in his last two starts after looking out of this world to start the season. However, even with those human starts in there, his ERA sits at 1.88. He should be fine to finish off this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 9: No (-120)

Seattle Mariners vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kansas City’s offense has been one of the great surprises of the year so far. They’re sixth in the majors in first inning runs and a touch better over the course of the whole game. While that might not be conducive to getting an NRFI, I like the pitching matchup here to limit them.

George Kirby has been pretty good this season. He’s rocking a 4.05 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP. However, the part I like best is how his past performance was against these Royals. On May 13th he threw seven scoreless and struck out six Royals in the process. The Royals only managed three hits in that contest and didn’t walk.

On the other side, we get Cole Ragans trying to limit the action of the Mariners. You have to love a strikeout pitcher getting to face the team that strikes our more than any other. Seattle is also 27th in MLB in runs scored. That means that this game should be a pitchers duel for as long as the starters are in – which should be at least the first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 9: No (-140)
