MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 24
Seattle Mariners vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
You have to love an NRFI spot where two of the worst three teams in scoring first inning runs are squaring off. The Nationals are a major league’s worst 0.21 runs per first inning, and the Mariners are just a touch better at 0.27. Neither offense has been all that potent for the rest of the game either, but the early has been particularly bad.
In addition to the offensive woes, we have a solid pitching matchup here. The top half of the inning will feature MacKenzie Gore, who has been a bright spot for the Nationals. He’s held opponents to two or less runs for each of his last five starts. He also hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game this season.
The flip side of things will feature George Kirby. While he’s had some rough outings lately, his season-long ERA is only up to 3.99. He’s held opponents scoreless in three of the last six games. Although the bad outings are alarming, the offense of the Nationals isn’t one I’m worried about capitalizing on.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 24: No (-130)
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast –Apple TV+
The top half of the inning in this game features Kutter Crawford, who has been outstanding out of the Red Sox rotation. He’s rocking a 2.17 ERA. Milwaukee has been a good hitting team – ranking 3rd in runs scored. However, they’re much worse early in the game – 12th in the majors in first inning runs. As a result, I think Crawford can keep them quiet early on.
Bryse Wilson has been fantastic for the Brewers as well. He has yet to allow more than two earned runs in a game so far. Since they’ve moved him into a real starting role, his strikeout numbers have taken off as well. Unlike Crawford, he’ll have the advantage of facing a less than stellar offense. While they are roughly as good at scoring first inning runs, the Red Sox are a middle of the pack scoring team in general. As a result, I like the NRFI here quite a bit.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 24: No (+105)
