2024 PGA Championship Picks
Outright Bets
Brooks Koepka 16/1
Death. Taxes. Brooks Koepka at PGA Championship venues. Don’t overthink things on this one. Brooks has been hitting the ball great on LIV all year long. He remains one of the best drivers in the world. And he’s entering Valhalla off a win in Singapore where he finally got the putter rolling. These were telltale signs of victory at his other three PGA Championship victories. The stage is set for him once again.
One concern, however, is that Valhalla might possibly be too easy a setup for Brooks Koepka. Valhalla, as a golf course, doesn’t have a lot of nuance. But neither does Bellerive, which shares the exact same agronomy as Valhalla. And Brooks won that PGA Championship at -16, which is approximately what the winning score will be at this year’s PGA Championship.
He’s a popular pick to win the 2024 PGA Championship. Don’t let that dissuade you. He was just as popular a selection at his other major championship victories, too. Make sure Brooks Koepka is on your outright card for the 2024 PGA Championship.
Jon Rahm 18/1
Rahm isn’t dominating LIV tournaments like many expected he would. And he’s starting to get criticism for it. Why would we think Jon Rahm can win the PGA Championship when he can’t even beat a field of has-beens?
First, LIV fields are much better than folks either want to give it credit for or want to admit. And second, the health of Rahm’s game at the moment is perfectly fine. Jon Rahm remains one of the best all around players in the world tee-to-green. He’s driving the ball as well as he was when he was on the PGA Tour. And his overall ball-striking remains elite. Both will do him well at Valhalla at the 2024 PGA Championship.
Better yet, Valhalla sets up perfectly for Jon Rahm. Rahm has been very good at Jack Nicklaus’ designs. He’s a former winner at Muirfield Village. He should own a second victory there if it weren’t for an untimely positive COVID test. And he nearly won at Sherwood Country Club and Glen Abbey. Rahm fares well on Nicklaus’ designs because most of his golf courses tend to favor a fade, which is the shot shape that Rahm favors.
Rahm is flying under the radar while the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka take up all the oxygen. It’s a great spot for Rahm to come in with a chip on his shoulder as the forgotten man and bring home another major championship victory.
Other Outright Bets to Consider:
- Bryson DeChambeau – 28/1
- Max Homa – 35/1
- Joaquin Niemann – 40/1
- Will Zalatoris – 90/1
Positional Bets
Sepp Straka Top 20 +325
Everyone is favoring the bombers this week at Valhalla. While distance is always an advantage, the fairways at Valhalla shouldn’t be impossible to hit like they are at other venues that heavily favored bombers. A player who is incredibly efficient off the tee, even if he doesn’t have a ton of length, should thrive at the golf course.
Sepp Straka fits this criteria. While he’s not the longest player out there, Sepp Straka is one of the leaders in Strokes Gained – Off-the-Tee over his last 50 rounds. He’s incredibly steady with the driver in his hands. He also is a great long iron player who historically hits well off of Zoysia. And he’s had some recent major success with Top 10’s at last year’s PGA Championship and Open Championship.
Plus, he’s entering the PGA Championship in great form. He finished Top 20 at the Masters. He was T5 at the RBC Heritage. And he hit the ball great at Quail Hollow last week on his way to a T8 finish at a PGA Championship-esque setup.
Sepp Straka absolutely has what it takes to be an out-of-nowhere PGA Championship victor. But for those who don’t quite have that faith, getting over 3/1 odds on a Top 20 bet on Sepp Straka is a good pick to make at the 2024 PGA Championship.
Stephan Jaeger Top 20 +375
Stephan Jaeger has been one of the best drivers on the PGA Tour this season. Not only is he long off the tee, but he’s not as erratic as some of his other bomber peers. That alone should put him on a bettor’s short list of players to target this week at the 2024 PGA Championship.
The knock on Stephan Jaeger is his iron game, particularly from long-range. However, his deficiencies in this area didn’t seem to affect him all that much at Torrey Pines. Or at Vidanta Vallarta. Or at Memorial Park. All of these golf courses feature long approach shots, and Jaeger found success at all of them this season.
He’s a late bloomer, but he’s evolved into a very solid player on the PGA Tour. He’s a great Top 20 pick for the 2024 PGA Championship.
