MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 9
Seattle Mariners vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV
It’s been over a week since the Mariners scored a first inning run. That’s consistent with the numbers that we’re seeing on their first inning across the year. They currently rank 24th in MLB in first inning runs with just 0.33 per game. Pablo Lopez hasn’t been his usual self this season. However, with as bad as the Mariners have been early in the game, he should be able to quiet the bats for at least three outs.
On the other side, we have double trouble. Like the Mainers, the Twins have been bad early in the game. They rank a touch worse than the Mariners in terms of first inning runs – just 0.31 per game, which puts them in 26th place overall. On top of that, Logan Gilbert has actually been quite good this season. He carries a 1.69 ERA with a 0.79 WHIP into Thursday’s action. He’s also yet to allow more than two earned runs in any start this year. As a result, the NRFI should be squarely in play.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 9: No (-150)
Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 5:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
While these two teams might seem to have potent offenses, they are actually not as high up as you might think. The Yankees rank 10th in runs scored on the year, whereas the Astros rank 16th in MLB. They are only a touch better on first inning runs, with the Yankees still in 10th and the Astros in 12th.
So, while their bats are a little cooler than you might expect, these two pitchers are quite hot. Ronel Blanco didn’t just throw a no-hitter earlier this year, he’s had a stellar first six starts. He rocks a 2.09 ERA six starts into the year and has a sub-1.00 WHIP.
To put the finishing touches on the NRFI, we’ve got Marcus Stroman going for the Yankees. He’s been solid for the bulk of this season, although he has had a bit of trouble with walks as of late. Luckily for him, the Astros are in the bottom half of the league in walks, so it should affect his ability to help us cash this NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 9: No (-105)
