MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 8
San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs
First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, Illinois
Broadcast – MLB TV
This may seem like an odd game to chase the NRFI on, but I love the pitching matchup. Even with these two teams ranked in the top ten in runs scored and first inning runs scored, I still think these two arms can keep the bats at bay early.
The first arm to trust is Dylan Cease, who has been largely spectacular for the Padres so far. Apart from one rough outing against the Phillies two starts ago, he’s been lights out. If we ignore that start, he has never allowed more than two runs in a game. Plus, in each of those games, he has at least six strikeouts – with 7+ in five of those starts.
On the other hand, we’ll trust Hayden Wesneski. After two long relief appearances, the Cubs have transitioned him to the starting rotation, and they aren’t looking back. In his two starts, he’s allowed just one earned run in 10.1 innings pitched, bringing his season ERA to just 0.54. He should be able to keep San Diego quiet for at least three outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 8: No (-125)
Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics
First Pitch – 3:37 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game is a touch different from the first one, as I’m not particularly worried about both of these offenses. That’s because one of these two have been downright terrible so far.
Oakland not only hasn’t scored in the first inning of seven straight games, but their run-scoring throughout the game has been bad. They average just 3.50 runs per game, which puts them in 28th place in the league. They rank the same in first inning runs per game while scoring just 0.31 per the first inning.
The other side is the only one we have to worry about with an NRFI. The Rangers scored one in the first on Tuesday and 10 in the second. However, they’ll face JP Sears on Wednesday, who has been solid as of late. He has given up one or fewer runs in four of the last five games. Thanks to those performances, his WHIP is down to 1.07, and that gives me the confidence for him to get out of the first.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 8: No (-130)
