Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – May 6

Triston McKenzie Higher than 15.5 Pitching Outs

Despite McKenzie’s slow start to the season, I really love him in this spot. On Monday, McKenzie and the Guardians will face off against the Detriot Tigers, who are one of the more surprising teams in baseball. The Tigers are 18-16 on the backs of great starting pitching. Detriot has not been able to get the bats going, though, and that was evident in scoring just 6 runs in three games against the Yankees.

McKenzie is coming off his best outing of the season, going 7.0 strong innings and allowing just 2 earned runs against the powerful Astros lineup. Full disclosure: McKenzie has recorded 15.5 outs in just two out of six starts this season, but it is his matchup today against the Tigers that has me excited!

Andrew McCutchen Lower than 7.5 Fantasy Points

Unfortunately, Andrew McCutchen is having one of the worst starts to any season of his career. The 37-year-old is hitting just .182 with 3 home runs, 7 RBIs, and a .601 OPS. McCutchen has been able to handle left-handed pitching quite easily throughout his career. In fact, it’s been one of his strengths, with a 120 career OPS+ vs. lefties.

This season, it has been a different story. McCutchen is just 2/25 against lefties and has struck out nine times. On Monday, he will face off against Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson, who is enjoying one of the best stretches of pitching in his career. This doesn’t bode too well for the former MVP.

Brent Rooker Higher than 6.5 Fantasy Points

Brent Rooker was one of the key offensive bright spots for the A’s last season, and he has carried some of that over to this season. The slugger is scorching hot right now. In the A’s three-game set against the Marlins, Rooker recorded 5 hits, 7 RBIs, and 2 home runs.

On Monday, Rooker and the A’s face off against the Rangers, who will be sending Andrew Heaney to the mound. Heaney has struggled immensely this season, pitching to an ERA of 5.10 and a WHIP of 1.10. I think Rooker keeps up his hot hitting today!
