MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 7
Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – NESN
This NRFI pick has far less to do with the offenses involved and way more to do with the pitching. Sure, the Braves are currently third in the majors in runs scored. However, Kutter Crawford has been great for the Sox.
He carries a 1.56 ERA and 1.07 WHIP into Tuesday’s action. He’s allowed just five earned runs in his last five starts and had six strikeouts in four of those appearances. The Braves are also 20th in the majors in first inning runs – a stark contrast from last year.
Similarly, on the other side, even though the Red Sox are a top-ten team in terms of first inning runs, the Brave’s pitching should keep them quiet. Reynaldo Lopez has exceeded expectations upon changing back to a starter. He has a 1.50 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over five starts. He’s averaging over six strikeouts per game on the season, and those should give you confidence that he can get through the first handful of batters.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 7: No (-105)
Baltimore Orioles vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
There’s no team in the majors worse at scoring in the first inning than the Washington Nationals. They only score an average of 0.26 runs per game in the first inning. They’re also only scoring in 17.7% of the first innings that they play in. They are a team you like to play most of the time on the NRFI, but when they face Corbin Burnes, you have to like it even more.
On the opposite side of the equation, I actually like the National’s chances at holding the Orioles early, too. Baltimore is not scoring often in the first inning either (just 23.5% of their games).
Additionally, Trevor Williams has been surprisingly good on the year. He carries a 2.27 ERA into Tuesday and has allowed just two earned runs over the last three games (16.0 innings). For those reasons, paired with the favorable number, I like the NRFI here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 7: No (-115)
