MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 4
Colorado Rockies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV
This NRFI is really all about one side. I don’t think anyone expects much of the Rockies – or any team for that matter – when they ssquare off with rookie sensation Jared Jones. He’s held a 3.18 ERA through the season with 42 strikeouts in just 34.0 innings. He’s never allowed more than three runs in a game and has allowed only one run that wasn’t a homer. The Rockies rank 23rd in runs score without even park adjusting, so Jones should keep the bats quiet.
Jones’ counterpart for the day with be Austin Gomber. While he hasn’t quite had the same numbers, he has only gotten beat up badly once, and that was last start against the Astros. Apart from that, he’s faced tough squads and lived to tell the tale. Pittsburgh is one of the few teams that scores less runs that the Rockies, and that comes after a hot start to the season.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 4: No (-130)
Miami Marlins vs. Oakland Athletics
First Pitch – 4:07 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Marlins currently rank 26th in the majors in runs scored. They’ll have the unfortunate task of facing Paul Blackburn, who has been a bright spot for the Athletics – albeit not lately. His hot start has his ERA down at 3.34 and that’s desptie allowing 10 runs over his last two starts. While that may be cause for a concern, in those starts he faced the Orioles and the Yankees – much better offenses than the Marlins.
You could give a similar breakdown coming back the other way. The Athletics are a terrible offense (29th in runs), and the starting pitcher has been low-key good. Trevor Rogers has held every team he’s played to three or less runs. That includes two games with the Braves who score more runs than any team in the majors. He’s walking a few more as of late, which is a cause for concern, but the Nationals don’t draw many walks. As a result, I think we can squeeze out another NRFI here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 4: No (-125)
