MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 24
New York Mets vs. San Francisco Giants
First Pitch – 3:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
This matinee pits a pair of teams that are in the bottom third of the league in first inning runs. The Giants are 21st in the league with just 0.38 runs per first inning. The Mets are far worse at 0.27 runs per first inning – good for 28th in MLB. Neither of those figures inspires confidence for run scoring early Wednesday.
The Mets might look to find some comfort in facing Blake Snell. He’s been bad in his shortened season so far with an ERA in the double figures. However, he’s been historically good against the Mets. In eight appearances, he’s gone 44.0 innings and struck out 57. Through those eight starts he’s carried a 2.66 ERA against New York.
One more thing that has me on the NRFI here is the pitching of Sean Manaea. While he got walloped Kansas City earlier this year, in his other three starts, he’s been lights out. He’s allowed just three runs in 13.0 innings apart from that rough one. I’m expecting that version of him here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 24: No (-120)
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, Ohio
Broadcast – MLB TV
When looking for a game to get down on some NRFI action, I like looking at ones that only have one side to worry about. In this one, I don’t feel like I have to worry about the Reds’ offense at all. They’re 29th in the MLB in first inning scoring rate. They have scored in the first inning of just 13.64% of games this year. Spencer Trunbull has been tough for the Phillies on the hill, but it almost doesn’t matter who it is.
On the other side, the Phillies have a tough matchup here. Nick Lodolo has pitched 12.0 innings this year and has allowed just one earned run and just one walk. His 16 strikeouts give me even more faith he can keep the Phillies quiet early – especially being that they’re striking out 8.43 times a game and a lot of that action comes from the top of that lineup.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 24: No (-125)
