MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 22
Oakland Athletics vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 1:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLBN
The Yankees might be a surprsing team to see on here – especially being as good as they are and being that they’re playing the Athletics. However, the Yankees scored in the first inning yesterday, and it made the first time they had done it in a five-game stretch. They’re averaging just 0.24 runs in the first inning of the year. JP Sears has been sneaky good for the Athletics as well, limiting opponents to one earned run in the last two games – 11.1 innings.
Carlos Rodon hasn’t been amazing for New York this year, but it almost doesn’t matter. Oakland is averaging just 2.90 runs per game on the season – which puts them in 29th in the league. It’d be less shocking if they were shut out for the game than if they scored in the first inning. For those reasons, I like the NRFI in this one.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 22: No (-125)
Detroit Tigers vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 6:50 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, Florida
Broadcast – MLB TV
Everything in this game points to a NRFI. The offenses are just not producing as their front offices might have expected. Both teams are in the bottom third of the league in runs scored. Their offenses fall short of a run per inning combined on this year. They’re also both in the bottom half of the league in terms of runs in the first inning.
If that offensive inadequacy isn’t enough for you, their pitchers certainly will make things harder. Tarik Skubal has just a 2.28 ERA on the year and he’s held his opponents scoreless in two of his four starts. On the other side Zach Littell has been even better. He has just a 2.14 ERA and has only allowed more than one run in one of his four starts this year. As long as they keep rolling this NRFI should be an easy one.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 22: No (-135)
