MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 16
Minnesota Twins vs. Baltimore Orioles
First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, Maryland
Broadcast – MLB TV
Neither of these offenses have been doing much in the first inning. The Twins rank 26th in first inning runs per game with just 0.29. That goes right along with their run scoring in general, which has them in 27th at 3.50 runs per game. The Orioles have been a touch better on the full game with 5.47 runs per game, but are still in the bottom half of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning.
If the bats don’t already lead you to NRFI, then the pitching might. Grayson Rodriguez and Chris Paddock square off with both looking solid so far this year. In five combined outings, neither has allowed more than two earned runs in a single game, and that includes games against the Dodgers, Pirates, and Brewers – who have all hit well.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 16: No (-105)
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Oakland Athletics
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game pits another pair of teams that have been bad in the first inning. The Cardinals are second to last in the league in percentage of games scoring in the first inning. They’re only ahead of the Nationals, who have still not scored in the first inning yet. The Athletics aren’r much better. They’ve scored in just 25.0% of first innings this year and are ranked 29th in runs scored on the year.
Another reason to love the NRFI is how well Lance Lynn is throwing. Three games into the season, his ERA sits at 2.63 – partially thanks to giving up zero earned to the Phillies. His counterpart, JP Sears, just shut out the Rangers. Each pitcher will have an easier test on Tuesday.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 16: No (-110)
