MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 14
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, Arizona
Broadcast – MLB TV
If you’re looking for the NRFI in this game, you only really have to worry about one side. The Cardinals have been bad at scoring runs in the first inning and beyond. They have a first inning run in just 13.3% of games and are scoring just 0.40 runs per first inning on the year. They’re also in the bottom third of runs scored in general. Facing Zac Gallen here shouldn’t help matters.
The one side you do have to worry about is potent though. The Diamondbacks have scored more first inning runs than any team in the league. They’re getting a first inning run 66.7% of the time this year. However, we’re still going to ride the NRFI on the strength of Miles Mikolas.
The Cardinals starter has had a brutal schedule to start the year. He’s had to face the Padres, Phillies and the Dodgers out of the gate. While he struggled with the Dodgers, he held the other teams to two runs over 6+ innings of work. He also didn’t concede a first inning run to either team.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 14: No (+100)
Washington Nationals vs. Oakland Athletics
First Pitch – 4:07 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV
These two teams only combine for 6.21 innings per game this season. That’s roungly 0.69 runs per inning and that’s a combined number for the two teams. Already we’re looking at a spot where NRFI looks great. Washington is also still the only team who has yet to score in the first inning on the year.
If we needed more ammo than just these two sad offenses, why not look to Nationals’ starter Trevor Williams. He has only allowed three runs over 10.1 innings this year and is 2-0. He should be able to hold the Athletics, and with Washington unable to score, the NRFI is in play.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 14: No (-110)
