Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – April 6
Jake Burger Higher than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Jake Burger has been swinging an extremely hot bat out of the gates for the struggling Miami Marlins. On Thursday, Burger homered twice and walked twice in an 8-5 loss to the Cardinals. For the season, Burger is 11/31 (.355) with 10 RBIs. Since coming over to Miami via trade last season, he has developed into one of the league’s most underrated hitters.
Steven Matz will take the ball on Saturday for the Cardinals. Matz pitched well in his first outing of the season against the Dodgers. He allowed just 2 runs, with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks over 5.1 innings.
Burger is 0/2 in his career against Matz, but I’m rolling with a hot bat to continue to mash.
Willson Contreras Higher than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
In the same game on the other side I’ll be backing the Cardinals backstop to also have a big game. In this spot, I love Contreras’ matchup against the Marlins starter Trevor Rogers. First off, Contreras mashes left-handed pitching. Last season, in 108 at bats, Contreras hit .296 with 23 RBIs.
On the other side of this matchup, Trevor Rogers had a rough first outing of the 2024 season. He went 5.0 innings against the Pirates but got roughed up to the effect of 4 earned runs on 7 hits. I think Rogers will have his hands full with this right-handed, heavy Cardinals lineup. As much as I’m betting on Contreras here, I’m fading Rogers as well.
Luis Severino Under 15.5 Pitching Outs
Many were shocked when the Mets and Luis Severino reached an agreement for a one-year $13 million contract for the 2024 season. Severino was downright awful for the Yankees last season. In 89.1 innings, Sevy pitched to a 6.65 ERA. He posted career worsts in pretty much every statistical category in a contract year.
Although he did have an impressive Spring Training, Severino got rocked in his first outing of 2024, allowing 3 earned runs on 11 hits to the Brewers.
On Saturday, Sevy will face the Reds, one of the most promising young teams in the National League. I don’t expect Sevy to get through five innings with the Reds lineup.
