MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 6
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
It almost doesn’t matter to me who is throwing for the Phillies here. The Nationals appear to have a pretty brutal offense yet again and have not managed to score in the first inning all year. It will be Ranger Suarez for the Phillies, and he did get touched up a bit by the Braves – but we aren’t really talking about similar offenses here.
On the side of the Phillies, I like them to go scoreless here in the first as a play on Nationals’ pitcher Jake Irvin. Perhaps he’s not a household name or someone you’re looking to back on every start, but I like what I saw out of him in his debut against the Reds. He went 1-2-3 in each of the first two innings and racked up three strikeouts in that span. The Phillies are striking out once an inning over the year, so I think Irvin could grab a couple early and halt any damage.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 6: No (-105)
Seattle Mariners vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game pits a pair of young guns out on the mound against some solid offenses. While Seattle and Milwaukee have been a little slow out of the gate, they both were about league average offenses last year and Seattle finished 11th in homers. And it’s that home run potential that’s dangerous for these young pitchers.
Although he didn’t allow any first inning runs, Bryce Miller had some early issues with the Red Sox offense. While they aren’t a potent offense, Boston took him deep twice over his four inning stint. One came from muscly Tyler O’Neill, but the other came from much less intimidating Enmanuel Valdez.
Similar issues for DL Hall with Milwaukee. He faced the Mets, who can’t seem to get out of their own way early this season. Although he didn’t give up a first inning run, he did get tagged for a dinger by Francisco Alvarez in the second.
