The Southland is an extremely fun mid-major conference every single year. They usually provide us with some solid “First Four” action in Dayton, but this season may be different. There is a clear favorite down south, and I believe they can make some noise outside of that initial round in Dayton. Let’s take a deeper look at my 2024 Southland Conference Tournament preview, best bets, and picks.
2024 Southland Conference Tournament Preview, Best Bets, and Picks
Favorite: McNeese State -240
The Cowboys were nearly flawless under Will Wade this season. 17-1 in conference was one of the best winning percentages in conference play of any team in the nation.
They are an extremely talented bunch and clearly in a class of their own in this league. Outside of taking care of business in conference, McNeese has wins over VCU, UAB, and Michigan. This team has its eyes on more than just the 2024 Southland Tournament Crown.
Best Bet: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi +280
Tamu CC won this league last year and got the play-in victory in Dayton. That was short lived, as they lost by 21 to Alabama in the round of 64. Corpus Christi lost just three games in the conference, two of which came to McNeese.
The Islanders had a great chance to win those games, but they lost by a combined eight points in two games. They know they have what it takes to upset McNeese, and that will be their goal these next few days.
Longshot: Nicholls +1600
Tevon Saddler has done a great job in his first season at Nicholls and is the youngest Division 1 coach this season. Nicholls has horses to make some noise during this tournament. In the last few seasons, they have not met their expectations for this event. +1600 is a great number on a talented team that has shown great signs this year and the last few years.
