College Basketball Picks for February 28th
Auburn at Tennessee (-6.5) (O/U 152.5)
The storyline is whether or not Jaylin Williams can suit up for the Auburn Tigers. That doesn’t change the stance I’m taking on the game, but it will change the confidence level and, undoubtedly, the Vegas line.
Tennesse had three losses before December and now have three losses since. They are an impressive team making their own case for an outside shot at a 1 seed. Those three losses before December were a three-game stretch of Purdue, Kansas, and at UNC. A stretch no other team would dare to take on. That will do a lot for NET, regardless of the outcome.
Auburn loves to play inside-out basketball. It’s easy to do with their tandem. Broome should still do well inside, with or without Williams tonight. Auburn being a better defensive team all around is inspiring as well.
Tennessee doesn’t get to the rim at the same rate as Auburn and will settle for mid-range shots. However, those shots come from Player of the Year candidate Dalton Knecht. They’re not all created equally.
I’m backing the more consistent offense in terms of shot creation and selection and the better post team. Two things that can travel on the road. Relying on three-point shots and turnovers wouldn’t be the recipe for a road cover. The way this game is called by the zebras will have a huge impact.
The Pick: Auburn +6.5
St. John’s at Butler (-1.5) (O/U 153)
St. John’s is getting points at Butler after beating Creighton at MSG. Butler hasn’t won a game in their last four games, and Butler has lost their last two home games. What gives?
Butler’s last two home games were against Marquette and Creighton. Those are not bad losses. The Red Storm responded after Pitino threw the entire roster and facilities under the bus.
Butler still has an outside shot at the tournament. This is a home game against a team that won’t be dancing after their biggest emotional game of the season. Back the Bulldogs in an ugly Big East game. There’s much to play for here. Butler isn’t dead yet.
The Pick: Butler -1.5
