NBA First FG Props – February 24
Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons
Tipoff – 8:00 pm EST
Little Caesars Arena – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – NBA League Pass
Despite being the cellar dweller of the NBA, the Pistons are actually quite strong out of the gate. They rank 5th in the league in first bucket percentage and a respectable 11th when it comes to the tip. Those alone are enough reason to start looking for which Piston to play on Saturday. However, when you add in that no team in the league is as bad as the Magic on the tip, and that they are 25th in first field goal scores – you really have to go with Detroit.
Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duran are guys who get plenty of early looks. Their odds reflect that fact as well as they regularly come in as the odds on favorites. However, only one player on the Pistons has a shot in their first three attempts in each of their last three games – Jaden Ivey. With the odds looking better, it’s time for the bulk approach to come through for us here.

Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks
Tipoff – 8:30 pm EST
Madison Square Garden – New York, New York
Broadcast – ABC
The Celtics have some of the best early game stats in the league. They rank second in the league when it comes to getting the first field goal at 64.3%. They aren’t much behind that on the tip, where they’re at 69.6% and are in 3rd place in the Association.
The Knicks are quite a ways down in both of those categories. They rank 16th in the league on the tip at 48.2%. Additionally, that number keeps falling now that Isaiah Hartenstein is their regular jump guy. He’s getting just 20.0% of all tips. They are also middle of the pack when it comes to conversions (50.0% and 15th in the league).
There are a lot of Celtics who have made their way to the early bucket spreadsheet. Jayson Tatum and Kristaps Porzingis are popular plays each time the Celtics take the court. However, neither of them have taken the Celtics first shot in either of the last two games. That designation belongs to Derrick White, who keeps firing from deep to kick off games. I think he gets one to fall here and cashes at a nice number.
