We obviously don’t have first bucket conversion rates for these squads, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find a way to establish some margins. The best place to start doing that is on the jumpball. The team that has won the jumpball has gotten 64.19% of the first buckets this season. With the poor defense of the All-Star Game, that should be an even better lead. The jumpball will likely be between Bam Adebayo (73.9% win percentage) and Nikola Jokic (53.7%). While we can’t handicap effort, the advantage here should be to the East.
Some associate the All-Star Game with firing up deep shots from anywhere on the court. While there is plenty of that to come, the early game is punctuated with dunks and inside scoring. All five of the first scores in last year’s game were 2-pointers. Four of those scores were inside of five feet. Those numbers are consistent over the course of the last three years.
So, if we’re trying to handicap who it is that’s going to take the ball to the rack, there’s a number of good options. However, in this one, the obvious answer is right in front of us. Over the last three All-Star Games, Giannis Antetokounmpo was the first to score for his team in every one of them. With the East likely to get the tip, expect him to take an uncontested dunk for an easy +350 here.
