Sports Betting News: Super Bowl Betting Expected To Reach Record; Taylor Swift Effect on ATD, And Less Sportsbook Commercials Will Be Seen

According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), a record amount of Americans are expected to wager over $23 billion on Super Bowl LVIII.

The survey, released on Tuesday, says 67.8 million people in the U.S. and its territories plan to wager an estimated $23.1 billion on this year’s Super Bowl between the Chiefs and 49ers. The increased number of bettors is up 35 percent from 2023, while the total wagered is an increase of $16 billion from last year.

Traditional Super Bowl betting is expected to pass casual wagers for a second consecutive year. 42.7 million American adults plan to place a traditional sports wager online, at a retail sportsbook, or with a bookie. This is an increase of 41 percent from 2023. 28.7 million adults intend to place online wagers using a legal U.S. sportsbook.

The increase is attributed to the growing number of legalized sports betting territories in the country. There are now 38 states plus the District of Columbia that allow legal sports betting in America. It doesn’t hurt that the game is taking place in the sports betting capital of the country, Las Vegas.

“As the Super Bowl comes to Las Vegas for the first time, this year’s record interest in wagering marks a full circle moment for the U.S. gaming industry,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller.

Meanwhile, casual bettors are expected to increase 32 percent from last year, according to the survey that sampled 2,204 adults. The AGA says 36.5 million plan to bet with friends or as part of a pool or squares contest.

Super Bowl Betting Trends – The Taylor Swift Effect

The survey added that bettors are nearly split on the outcome of the Super Bowl. The surveyed public favors the Chiefs, with 47 percent planning to bet on Kansas City. Only 44 percent of those surveyed say they will bet on the 49ers. SGPN experts are leaning toward Kansas City, too.

The books are saying something similar. The line opened up with San Francisco favored by -2.5. It was quickly bet down to -1.5 only to go back up to -2.5 as of Tuesday.

As we take a deeper dive into the numbers, BetMGM says that 99 percent of bets are on the over. The sportsbook adds that the most bet player prop is the over on Brock Purdy’s rush yards (12.5). Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, is the most bet Anytime TD prop.

According to Caesars Sportsbook, the Taylor Swift Effect is also proving true. There have been more Super Bowl bets on a Travis Kelce ATD than all San Francisco spread bets through Tuesday. Caesars has also taken a $100,000 coin toss bet on tails at -105, a $200,000 Brock Purdy MVP bet at +240, and a $1 million San Francisco moneyline bet at -120.

Sportsbook Super Bowl Commercial Season

The sportsbooks have been vying for our dollar in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. The question is: How many ads will we see during the game?

FanDuel’s Kick of Destiny 2 has been prominent so far in these playoffs. BetMGM has turned to commercials featuring Vince Vaughn, Tom Brady, and Joe Montana to get our attention. Kevin Hart and DraftKings are also on the airwaves as the sportsbooks try to get users before the Super Bowl.

However, the NFL has limited the amount of sportsbook commercials that will air during the Super Bowl. According to this Associated Press article, there will only be three ads for sportsbooks during the game. One will take place right before kickoff, with the other two airing during the game.

“We’ve put some policies in place to limit the amount of advertising for sports betting that happens in our live games,” David Highhill, the NFL’s general manager for sports betting, said. “It’s roughly one ad per quarter. All told, less than 5% of all in-game ads are sports betting ads.”

He added: “We’ve put some policies in place to limit the amount of advertising for sports betting that happens in our live games,” Highhill said. “It’s roughly one ad per quarter. All told, less than 5% of all in-game ads are sports betting ads.”
The article says that the sportsbooks didn’t purchase all the slots they could have.
