College Basketball Picks January 14th
UAB (-15.5) at Florida Atlantic (O/U 153.5)
A pair of high-powered offenses meet up in Boca Raton on Sunday afternoon. Although UAB has lost a step from their squad the last few seasons, they still get up and down the court fairly well.
FAU has been the definition of up and down. They have a few massive wins on their resume but a few very questionable losses. They are coming in off a game vs. Tulane, where they won with free throws at the buzzer. Truthfully, they got lucky and should not have won that game.
In this matchup, both offenses have advantages over the defenses. Pace-wise, they are both middling but will push it from time to time. UAB knows they will not be able to slow down this dynamic FAU offense for 40 minutes, so their game plan needs to be score, score, and score some more.
I believe this will dictate an up-tempo game, pushing the score over the total.
The Pick: Over 153.5
Tulane (-2.5) at Tulsa (O/U 159.5)
As mentioned above, FAU should have been very lucky to beat Tulane a few days ago. That was a true ref job if I’ve ever seen one.
To the eye, Tulane is a much better team than Tulsa, but the numbers do not give them much of an edge. Throw in Tulsa’s home-court advantage, and I think we’ll have a game here.
With that being said, Tulane has to be salivating to get back on the court after what happened in the FAU game. Coach Ron Hunter is one of the best motivators, and he will do exactly that. Tulane will have what it takes to cover this short number.
The Pick: Tulane -2.5
