College Basketball Picks December 19th

Virginia at Memphis (-3.5) (O/U 131.5)

The books are expecting a rock fight here, with the total set at 131.5. The Cavaliers will play their first true road game of the season in Memphis against a Tigers team that is 3-0 on their court.

Memphis is in the meat of their schedule, and there are concerns that they may be wearing down a bit from their stretch of tough opponents. Virginia will be another test for them and a style that will grind and frustrate opponents.

It will be interesting to see which team dictates the pace. Memphis is a faster team, while we know what Virginia does. Giving the edge to a Memphis team at home with the energy.

The Pick: Memphis -3.5

Marquette at Providence (+4) (O/U 146.5)

Let’s preface this by saying that it is unwise to bet against Providence when they are home. However, I find myself a believer in this Marquette team. Shaka Smart will take a complete Marquette team into Providence on Tuesday night to take down the Friars.

The Golden Eagles are a top-20 team on both sides of the ball and play their offense with pace. They aren’t one-dimensional and have length around Kolek. This isn’t Ed Cooley on the bench anymore for the Friars, but they are still competitive. They beat the Wisconsin Badgers with defense and lost at Oklahoma due to their three-point shots not falling.

The Golden Eagles have already beaten Illinois, Kansas, and Texas. Most recently, they beat St.Thomas by 5 in a clear look ahead spot to this game. This is a conference road game for the Golden Eagles, but there still seems to be value on them.

The Pick: Marquette -4
