College Basketball Picks December 13th
Florida International at Florida Atlantic (-21.5) (O/U 152)
The Florida International Panthers make the short trip from Miami to visit the Florida Atlantic Owls in Boca Raton. The in-state travel spot for the Panthers seems to motivate them, as they narrowly lost to the Miami Hurricanes 86-80 in Coral Gables earlier this season.
We are focusing on the totals where we have been hot as of late. Teams don’t struggle to score against the FIU squad, and Florida Atlantic will push the pace.
The Florida Atlantic Owls average 84.4 points per game which ranks 28th in the country. The Panthers force turnovers defensively but will match the pace of their opponent.
Florida Atlantic has shot 7% better than their opponents this season, resulting in an average point differential of 13.8.
The Panthers aren’t timid from behind the arc, putting up 24.1 three-pointers per game, trailing just Liberty in their own conference. The key is the Florida Atlantic Owls’ efficiency from deep.
The Owls are shooting 38.5% from deep this season ranking in the top 40 this season. There are 16 teams ranking ahead of them in percentage that take fewer threes than the Owls, making that number more impressive.
The Pick: Over 152
Auburn vs. UNC Asheville (-19.5) (O/U 149.5)
The Auburn Tigers go into Huntsville, AL, to match up with Drew Pember and the Bulldogs. The Tigers aren’t ranked inside the top 25, but they are well on their way.
Pember averages a solid 18.1 ppg to pair with 7.2 rebounds on the season. Fletcher Abee and Josh Banks complement the forward offensively from deep, rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs.
The Auburn Tigers come off the most impressive offensive display of the season, averaging 1.4 points per possession in their win against Indiana.
They never led by less than 11 in the second half and made life miserable for the Hoosiers on both ends. The total in that game is skewed by the current high mark of offensive efficiency in terms of points per possession.
The Tigers have a small look-ahead spot in this neutral site matchup. USC visits the Tigers this weekend in Auburn. The Bulldogs enter the matchup coming off two consecutive losses.
UNC-Asheville knows they can’t run with Auburn, especially after what the Tigers did to the Indiana transition defense. Expect life to be rough for the Bulldogs offense putting most of the scoring on the backs of Auburn.
Auburn gets the win in the sandwich spot of Power 5 opponents, but the total should soar under as Pearl gets the Tigers ready for USC defensively.
The Pick: Under 149.5
