Week 14 Fantasy Football Flex Starts Based on TD Opportunity
Alexander Mattison – RB – Minnesota Vikings
Alexander Mattison has operated as the lead running back in Minnesota the entire season and has yet to score a rushing touchdown. Struggles with drops and fumbles have done little to affect his playing time, either. There isn’t any reason to expect that to change now, and he should remain in the lead role for the remainder of the season. As a result, Mattison should get the bulk of the rush attempts against one of the worst defenses against opposing running backs in Week 14.
Minnesota will square off against Las Vegas this weekend, who rank 26th in fantasy points per game given up to the running back position. Additionally, they are 29th in red zone points, opening up a chance for Mattison to score his first touchdown on the ground. He is No.12 in the NFL in red zone touches, and his luck is due to turn around against a poor rush defense. Mattison is a solid start and a low-end RB2 for fantasy managers fighting for a playoff spot.
AJ Dillon – RB – Green Bay Packers
There remain minimal updates on Aaron Jones, and after missing the last two games due to injury, his status is in doubt ahead of Week 14. Regardless, if he does play, his role will be limited. Enter AJ Dillon, who has finished as a top-24 fantasy running back for three straight weeks. While he ranks only No.44 in yards per touch among running backs, steady volume on the ground and through the air has buoyed his fantasy value.
Similar to Alexander Mattison, Dillon has also been unlucky near the goal line. Despite 21 red zone touches and five near the goal line, he has converted only one touchdown. Dillon also has a great chance of changing his fortunes this weekend, facing off against the New York Giants. They are 27th against fantasy running backs and have surrendered an RB1 performance in two straight matchups. Dillon is an RB2 if Aaron Jones doesn’t play and a solid flex option if he manages to take the field.
Gerald Everett – TE – Los Angeles Chargers
Gerald Everett has struggled to establish a consistent role in the Chargers’ offense in 2023. This is a surprise, considering the lack of success their receivers are having behind Keenan Allen following multiple injuries. However, he is still No.12 in red zone targets among tight ends and has caught three touchdowns in his last 6 games. Tied to Justin Herbert in a plus matchup this weekend, Everett will score once again against the Broncos.
Denver is dead last against opposing tight ends and has given up 6 touchdowns to the position in 2023. Without a reliable group of pass catchers, Herbert will continue to force the ball to Everett, who has 9 targets in his past two games. He sits just outside of TE1 territory and is a great start if fantasy managers don’t have a reliable option already on the roster.
Romeo Doubs – WR – Green Bay Packers
After finally looking like his former self, second-year wide receiver Christian Watson suffered a non-contact hamstring injury in Week 13. This marks his fifth hamstring injury since 2021, making it unlikely he will suit up against the Giants this Monday night. Despite losing ground in the wide receiver pecking order, Doubs will thrust himself back into the starting conversation for fantasy purposes. The Giants’ defense is a disaster, and this marks the rare time I will highlight two players from the same team on this list.
In addition to struggling against running backs, the Giants also rank 27th against opposing wide receivers. This is one of the least talented units in the NFL, with little to play for. The Packers should have no problem scoring multiple touchdowns in this matchup. Las Vegas agrees as well, with an implied point total of 20.5 from most sportsbooks. Look for Doubs to be a reliable flex option and a strong WR3 as a result.
Jerry Jeudy – WR – Denver Broncos
The SGPN long shot of the week is Denver Broncos’ wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. After coming into this season with high hopes, Jeudy has yet to finish as a top-24 fantasy receiver once so far. Furthermore, he’s only found the end zone one time and has taken a back seat to Courtland Sutton as well. While Jeudy can’t save his season at this point, he is poised to bounce back against the soft Los Angeles Chargers defense.
The Chargers defense has been highlighted multiple times in this article, and they are the 3rd worst team against opposing wide receivers. Injuries have once again plagued a talented unit, leaving them without some of their top players. Offenses have had a field day as a result, and the Broncos should bounce back after a disappointing showing in Week 13. Russell Wilson is certainly no longer the player he was in Seattle. However, he has improved compared to 2022 and will throw multiple touchdowns this weekend.
