NFL Week 13: Underdog Fantasy Pick ‘Em -Defense
Patrick Surtain – Higher Than 3.5 Tackles +Assists
The Texans head to Mile-High this weekend to take on the Denver Broncos in a matchup of teams whose offenses have been on fire as of late. Houston has averaged 28 points per game over their last four contests, while Denver is at 24.5. Offenses that move the ball lead to defensive backs getting tackles.
Surtain has gone over this total in two games in a row and five games this season, including a seven tackle game against the Chiefs in Week 6. The way the Texans’ offense has been dealing, their wide receivers will get receptions, leading to tackle opportunities for Surtain.
Andrew Van Ginkel – Higher Than .5 Sacks (Spicy Play x1.25)
Spicy play alert! The Spicy play (noted by a pepper next to the player’s stat) gives you an increased multiplier for that player. This play is simple: Sam Howell has been sacked 55 times in the first 12 weeks of the NFL season. Bryce Young who checks in second at being sacked by NFL defenses, has only been brought down 40 times. Toss in a Miami defense that recorded seven sacks in Week 12 against the Jets and you do have a spicy play.
Van Ginkel has already recorded four sacks on the season while playing over 60% of snaps this season for the Miami Dolphins defense. With the loss of star pass rusher Jaelan Phillips, who recorded four sacks in the last three games, Van Ginkel will be expected to step into that role as he did earlier in the season when Phillips missed time.
TJ Watt – Higher Than 3.5 Tackles + Assists
This Pick ‘Em is seemingly a gift from the Underdog gods, as TJ Watt has averaged almost 8 tackles per game over the last four Pittsburgh Steelers games. Currently third in Defensive Player of the Year odds, Watt is going to be looking to continue to pile up stats and build the case for that award.
In Week 13 the Steelers defense takes on the Arizona Cardinals. A team that should be just good enough to not make this a blowout where Watt is on the sidelines but does enough running and small check-down plays for Watt to rack up some tackles.
Shaquil Barrett – Higher Than 0.5 Sacks (Spicy Play x1.5)
As mentioned above, Bryce Young, the #1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been sacked the second most amount of times (40) this season by NFL defenses. Barrett, the stud pass rusher who recorded a career-high 19.5 sacks in 2019, can still get after the quarterback. In 2023 Barrett has four sacks, including one against rookie CJ Stroud, and has forced two fumbles. Look for Barrett to press Young throughout the game and at least bring him down once.

Kevin Byard – Higher Than 8.5 Tackles + Assists
Since being traded from Tennessee, the safety has fit in nicely with this NFC powerhouse defense. Last week, Byard led the team in tackles, recording nine solo tackles and 13 total tackles in an overtime win against the Bills. This week, it’s another potent offense in the 49ers. With stars like Christian McCaffrey, Debo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and the rest of the powerful 49ers attack, Byard is sure to get some work in the defensive backfield. Expect Byard to easily hit this number.
