Week 3 Target Share Report

Week 3 Target Share Report

Last week had some dominant target performances that led to some unlikely leaders and losers. The target share and route percentage are starting to show some unnoticed winners that I intend to give you a heads up on. Let’s review the results from last week:

  • Buy Tank Dell – From WR19 in Week 2 to WR7 in Week 3
  • Buy DeVante Parker – Saw a drop in snaps but still saw 90% of routes. The game script really drove this.
  • Buy Marquise Brown – WR22 in Week 2 to WR20 in Week 3
  • Sell Nelson Agholor – WR23 in Week 2 to WR59 in Week 3
  • Sell Chase Claypool – WR41 in Week 2 to WR99 in Week 3
  • Buy Sam LaPorta – TE8 in Week 2 to TE1 in Week 3
  • Buy Adam Trautman – Saws snaps and target share rise again in Week 3

Not terrible for the second week of suggestions, so what does Week 3 of the NFL season tell us?

Week 3 Target Share Report

Week 3 of the NFL season brought to light more information regarding targets, snaps, routes, and overall opportunities for our fantasy squads. So what does it all mean, and how can we move forward? Let’s find out.

Week 2 Absent Players in Week 3

We saw a fair amount of big-time risers based on the route participation and target percentage in Week 2. We saw Zack Moss take over, running 89% of possible routes, handling 86% of the rushing work, and playing 98% of possible snaps. The knowns of Jeudy, Andrews, and Kelce don’t need to be discussed, but I think DeVante Parker should be a target in your leagues. He immediately participated in 94% of passing downs and took a 16% target share.

Major Target Share Market Movers (Route Participation)

For major market movers, I want to see a route participation jump of over 30% from week to week or a target share change of over 10%. A couple of things to recognize in the route participation jump. Two major players in Week 1 returned to their normal participation in Jakobi Meyers and Brandin Cooks. Both players had over 75% route participation and saw a good target share upon their return. If they managed to be dropped due to no IR or short rosters, be sure to add them.

While Rashod Bateman has seen an uptick in snaps each of the past three weeks, he is dealing with a hamstring injury. He has also seen a jump in route participation in conjunction with this. I say this to say he’s not the biggest riser from an opportunity perspective for the Baltimore Ravens. Nelson Agholor saw a 55% jump in route participation from Week 2 to Week 3. I would suggest in deeper leagues, make him a possible roster addition.

DJ Chark was written off after his lack of involvement in Week 2. In hindsight, I should have noticed this and recommended a change. Unfortunately, I may be a week too late. After seeing 62% of the snaps and only 57% of routes, I wasn’t ready to make that recommendation. Well, in Week 3, he jumped to 94% of snaps, 93% of routes, and was the overall WR15. He should still be on the waiver wire and should be added in all formats.

One more player I think is a deep addition in dynasty leagues that meets these thresholds is Demario Douglas. The New England Patriots are looking for answers outside of Hunter Henry. As a rookie, he has seen fluctuations in snaps but saw a big change in route participation from Week 2 to Week 3, going from 8% to 39%. That WR room is wide open, and I liked him as a deep sleeper coming out of college. If you have the taxi space and the rules allow it, I would recommend an add-and-stash.

Now, let’s take a look at the players that saw a target share jump of over 10%.

Acquire – Major Target Share Market Movers (Target Share)

Wan’Dale Robinson, WR for the New York Giants, is returning from a late-season knee injury. He didn’t play a ton in Week 3, but he is a candidate to see major jumps in opportunity as the season goes on. The wide receiver room in NY needs some assistance, and he can be a weapon for a clever Brian Daboll.

He saw a modest usage with 22% of snaps, garnering a 13% target share and only running 23% of routes. He meets the requirements to be in this section, and I think he should be a speculative addition to your waiver wire.

Like the Giants, the Kansas City pass catchers not named Travis Kelce have been hit or miss over the last two seasons. Who do you trust? Well, the numbers say Rashee Rice is the breakout candidate. He has seen upticks in snaps, routes, and targets from Week 2 to Week 3. While doing so, he also has managed to lead the Chiefs in yards per route run, which is a key analytical indicator for success. Go trade for him now before you regret it.

I would be remiss not to mention the obvious somewhere in this article. De’Von Achane showed the explosiveness that got some of us excited this offseason. It was on full display with a 4-TD performance. What I would just realize is the snaps aren’t necessarily there, and this is obviously an outlier week.

He did see an uptick of 11% more targets, 29% more routes, and 37% more rushes on his way to the overall RB1 finish against the Broncos. Raheem Mostert also had a huge game, and a player who only plays 41% of snaps is not worth 100% of your remaining FAAB. Definitely place a bid, but don’t waste everything with too high of expectations.

Pass – Major Target Share Market Movers (Target Share)

In Week 3, we did see some outliers from a fantasy perspective as it pertains to opportunities. This section is to identify the players you should be avoiding based on an outlier week.

The “Chosen One” has returned! Robbie “Chosen” Anderson is back with a Week 3 stat line of 68 yards and a touchdown. That made him the overall WR17 this week. Pick him up, right? WRONG! He caught one ball on one target, played on 58 percent of snaps, and ran routes on 52% of plays with Jaylen Waddle out of the lineup. He also needs a 70-point showing to get that opportunity. Do not bite on this, as his snaps and opportunities will fall once Waddle returns to the lineup.

I’ve never been the biggest supporter of Rondale Moore, even in his days at Purdue. The numbers are starting to scare me as well. He has seen his snaps fall in each of the first three weeks of the season. In a week where he had his best production, he played fewer snaps, ran fewer routes, and had a yards per catch of a measly 2 yards. His fantasy production came as he got a little run in the backfield. Avoid the trap and do not waste waiver priority or FAAB on the addition.

Minor Target Share Market Movers

So, the minor movers will be the players who have seen a 5% – 10% increase in volume of opportunity. This doesn’t mean they have seen more targets just yet, but their opportunities have risen.

Rookie Josh Downs has managed to take it slow as the Colts are focusing on easy completions and running the football with fellow rookie Anthony Richardson behind center. We have, however, seen Downs continue to garner massive amounts of playing time (all three games of 75% of snaps), but it hasn’t really translated to massive production.

He did, however, see a 9% jump in both target share and route participation from Week 2 to Week 3. I do think some of this had to do with the gameplan understanding they had a more accomplished passer in Gardner Minshew behind center. Josh Downs is worth an add in deeper leagues and should be a trade target in dynasty leagues.

Another rookie to discuss in this section is Michael Wilson. The rookie Cardinal receiver has managed to buzz in the fantasy community. He has seen a fair amount of snaps, but the opportunity hasn’t quite shown up, similar to the Downs situation. We got to see his ability to make big plays over the last two weeks, though, with over 18 yards per catch in Week 2 and 43 yards per catch in Week 3. He saw a 9% increase in route opportunity. I expect to see more involvement moving forward.

Everyone is likely talking about Marvin Mims and his two big weeks for the Denver Broncos. Mims has popped off the last two weeks, and the numbers are starting to show that the team is going to expand his role. From Week 2 to 3, he has seen a jump from 4% target share to 12% target share and a 13% route participation to 26% route participation. This includes a week where we saw the return of Jerry Jeudy. I like Mims as a flier, but I don’t want to rely on him in my lineup just yet.
