MLB Picks for August 23rd

Minnesota Twins @ Milwaukee Brewers

Start Time – 2:10 pm EST
American Family Field
Broadcast – MLB TV

Milwaukee has gotten hot as of late and is looking to run away with the NL Central. They ride a four-game win streak into Wednesday, which includes a sweep of the Rangers and the first game of this series. Additionally, they are hitting better with six or more runs in each of those four games.

They’ll have a tougher task ahead of them, with Kenta Maeda hitting the hill for the Twins. Maeda has a 2.89 road ERA and has held opponents to two or fewer runs in eight of his last ten starts. I’d be all over the Twins if they had any offense to speak of. Instead, I’ll just play the under here, which is set at eight runs (-110).

Cincinnati Reds @ Los Angeles Angels

Start Time – 4:07 pm EST
Angel Stadium
Broadcast – MLB TV

Neither of these teams are coming into this game with hot bats either. The Angels are averaging just 4.2 runs a game over their last five. The Reds are, perhaps unsurprisingly, worse in that category, with just 3.6 per game in their last five. They also haven’t scored more than three in any of their last four games.

To suppress offensive matters even more, Shohei Ohtani takes the mound for the Angels. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in three straight starts – one of which was a complete game. Andrew Abbott hasn’t been quite that good, but he has limited teams to just two runs each of his last two times out. He brings his sub-3.00 ERA to Los Angeles and has been good on the road. Even with all of those facts, the total is set at 8.5, and I’m grabbing the under again at -115.

Prop(s) of the Day – Mackenzie Gore o5.5 Strikeouts

Gore has been up and down over his last few starts. He’s giving the Nationals some length, at least, but he’s wavered at just how hard he’s hit. Luckily for him, he’ll be facing the Yankees, who just can’t seem to get things together. They’re riding a massive losing streak and are averaging just 2.0 runs per game over their last five.

Additionally, they’re striking out way more – 9.67 times per game over their last three. Keeping the runs down, Gore should be able to grab at least six innings, and this strikeout prop will be ripe for the picking.
