Hendon Hooker – NFL Rookie Draft and Dynasty Watch
Background
Hendon Hooker was a multi-sport athlete coming out of high school and a 4-star recruit who initially spent three seasons with Virginia Tech and totaled extremely modest numbers of about 2,800 yards, 22 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
He then transferred to the Volunteers for the 2021 season and never looked back. He is a dual-threat quarterback and a raw prospect.
Height – 6’4″
Weight – 218 pounds
College Career
A 4-star recruit who committed to Virginia Tech in 2017, Hooker appeared in 10 games in 2019 and 8 games in 2020 until he decided to enter the transfer portal and take his talents to Tennessee.
He played a full season in 2021, and until he suffered an ACL injury in November, he was on a tear. In his two starting seasons with Tennessee, Hooker totaled 7,130 yards between rushing and passing and 68 touchdowns.
Cmp/Att | Yds | TD/INT | Rush Att | Yds | Rush TD | |
2020 | 98/150 | 1,339 | 9/5 | 120 | 620 | 9 |
2021 | 206/308 | 2,945 | 31/3 | 167 | 620 | 5 |
2022 | 229/329 | 3,135 | 27/2 | 104 | 430 | 5 |
QB Pros
Production
Hooker has not only produced on the ground while at Tennessee with over 1,000 rushing yards, but he also has been productive through the air.
Decision Making
While starting at Tennessee, he only has five interceptions. This is because he is a good decision-maker and doesn’t force throws.
Rushing Ability
He is more than just a scrambling quarterback. He has the legs to really hurt you. With that, though, he doesn’t look to run first.
🗣JAKE’S TAKES:
Hendon Hooker will be looked at as the QB who resurrected Tennessee back to the spotlight..and it couldn’t of happened to a better person @Vol_Football pic.twitter.com/rS3iSxore0

QB Cons
Injury Concern
I just want to see him clear medicals at some point. The ACL could affect his rushing upside.
Touch
He isn’t the most developed prospect as a passer. He tends to lack the ability to put the required touch on the ball to drop passes in between coverage.
Mechanics
This isn’t as big a deal to me, but his mechanics are not where you would prefer them to be. His footwork definitely causes some accuracy issues more times than not.
Former Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker, who tore his left ACL on Nov. 19, is off crutches and told me he should be running by end of March and ready for training camp. He’s at the @seniorbowl to speak with teams — and says he’s still the best player in the draft. More on @nflnetwork pic.twitter.com/lYZpB6jbFV
