History With Ali-Spinks And Leonard-Hearns + Fight Picks! | Big Fight Weekend (Ep. 61)

On the latest edition of the show, it’s time for T.J. and his guests to get a little nostalgic, as two huge fight anniversaries happened four decades ago this week with Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.

T.J. welcomes Marquis Johns, Sr. Writer of BigFightWeekend.com, and historian Lee Groves of RingTV.com and his own boxing history books to the show.

The guys discuss “The Greatest” Muhammad Ali recapturing the Heavyweight title for a second time, when he defeated Leon Spinks in a rematch in the Louisiana Superdome in 1978. Lee gives great perspective on how Ali got “the magic back” for one more night. They also go over the anniversary of Leonard’s epic World Welterweight title win over unbeaten Thomas “Hit man” Hearns the same week but three years later in 1981 in Las Vegas.

It was part of the “Four Kings” who ruled the middle divisions of boxing in the late 70s through the early 90s with Robert Duran and Marvin Hagler. And, they became the wealthiest non-Heavyweights ever in doing so.

Finally, T.J. and Marquis go over the limited fight cards for the weekend that was supposed to have Canelo Alvarez going for Super Middleweight supremacy but its delayed until November. Still, there are a couple of Premier Boxing Champions cards on back to back nights in Bakersfield, CA that Marquis has insight on for fans.
